Kettle Moraine Land Trust KETTLE MORAINE LAND TRUST
(the article in the recently published Town newsletter was incorrect, this is the corrected version for 2013)
The Kettle Moraine Land Trust (KMLT) was founded in November, 2000 (originally called the Lauderdale Lakes Conservancy). At the time, due to tax and other considerations the Lauderdale Lakes Improvement Association (LLIA) supported the formation of the Trust, and transferred ownership of the Island Woods Preserve to it. Island Woods Preserve had been owned by the LLIA since the 1950’s with very little management attention. Transferring ownership to KMLT assured its long-term protection.
In the early years, KMLT focused on Island Woods, making it a true Preserve. It:
• made significant strides in removing invasive plant species,
• protected the Preserve in perpetuity by donating a Conservation Easement on it to the LLIA and to the Lauderdale Lakes Lake Management District (LLLMD)
• constructed an Overlook observation deck along Oak Park Road using engraved bricks honoring significant donors
• provided an educational Preserve description at the Overlook, and
• built a trail crossing the Preserve with a Leopold bench for walkers to enjoy restful kettle viewing from a moraine high point.
Over the years KMLT has broadened its conservation efforts to other Lauderdale Lakes issues. For example, it:
• accepted the donation of a Conservation Easement on the Lauderdale Lakes Country Club from the LLLMD to assure that the 55 acre property will remain open space in perpetuity,
• worked with the Town of LaGrange to enact a mandatory Conservation Subdivision Ordinance tied to the voluntary Walworth County Ordinance,
• partners with the LLIA in hosting Lauderdale’s annual Fish Jamboree,
• conducts annual Elkhorn High School student environmental Education Days in one of its
Preserves,
• teamed with the Lauderdale Lake District to seek funding for the construction of a barrier in Sterlingworth Bay to prevent a future “Leak-in-the Lake” disaster.
Beyond Lauderdale it has:
• accepted a Conservation Easement on fourteen lake front lots on North Lake, Town of Sugar Creek, to permanently protect the lots from development,
• worked with the Delavan Sanitary District and the DNR to enact environmental protective measures in their large watershed,
• accepted title to a wetland Preserve along Jackson Creek, called the Jackson Creek Preserve, which is protecting Delavan Lake,
• worked with the Lake Beulah community to help manage the DNR owned Beulah Bog Preserve,
• accepted two Conservation Easements near Lake Beulah, and acquired a new Preserve named the Beulah Bluff Preserve overlooking Beulah Lake.
The Trust has an experienced full time Program Manager Maggie Zoellner, with an office in the Lauderdale Community Center near the intersection of Sterlingworth Drive and Highway 12/67. It seeks annual memberships for a donation of $35. It welcomes suggestions, questions, and seeks committee participation by anyone interested in our local environment and lake conservation. Membership donations can be made by mail to KMLT, PO Box 176, Elkhorn, WI, 53121. Jerry Petersen continues as KMLT President, and can be reached at jerry@kmlandtrust.org. Maggie Zoellner, can be reached at maggie@kmlandtrust.org or on 262-949-7211. You can learn much more by viewing KMLT’s website at kmlandtrust.org.
This year's annual celebration will be at the Lake Beulah Yacht Club in August, please check the website kmlandtrust.org for details.
